How to Build a Monster: 10:30 – 12:30 p.m.
Join award-winning, bestselling author, Fran Wilde for a wildly fun monster-generating workshop with a kick. Through discussion, drawing, and story writing, we look at types of monsters (scary, big, fuzzy, confused, hungry) and brainstorm our own using something familiar (a washing machine), a superpower (flight [flying washing machines!), and what it wants (socks!). We also talk about their weaknesses, because every monster has a weakness. Will your monster change into something friendlier? That’s up to you! Suitable for rising middle school ages.
Cursing in Fantasy Worlds: 2 – 4:30 p.m.
This interactive workshop looks at how shows like Firefly and Battle Star Galactica, and books (Game of Thrones, the Hobbit) use imaginary cursewords, and how these can be worldbuilding tools for writers that explore what a culture fears and wants most. This is actually a class on linguistics, but don’t tell anyone. (Caveat: LOTS of cursing. LOADS. Participants and their relatives are forewarned.) Led by award-winning, bestselling author, Fran Wilde.
